Thank you for your interest in helping LHS. Please note that as of March 2022, we are not seeking new volunteers. We will update this page when opportunities arise in the future.
LHS is dedicated to preserving, promoting and presenting the history of Lenexa. We seek volunteers who enjoy applying their skills, interests, energy and experience to those efforts, such as:
- Museum guide
- Community Involvement / Events
Please let us know what interests you and we will be happy to provide information and insight. Use the Contact Us page, message us on Facebook or call 913-492-0038 during operating hours.
And, be sure to tell us if you want college credit.
Herb Garden Volunteer
Herb Garden Volunteers needed this spring!
No experience necessary. The Legler Barn Herb Garden Volunteers will teach you about gardening and herbs.
Caboose / Waiting Station Renovation
If you have experience with staging a room, painting, floor repair or would like to help clean – your assistance will be greatly appreciated. If you would like to help but can’t put in the labor, renovation donations are welcome.
Are you looking for college credit, experience for a future career, or are a retired archivist looking to volunteer? We could use a hand or two reorganizing our archive, logging artifacts into our system, cataloging, and helping with an upcoming inventory project.
Festivals / Events
Interested in helping during festivals and major LHS events? Wonderful! We can always use help during any event we are a part of our but our biggest need is during the BBQ Battle and Spinach Festival.
Often times, assistance is needed directing cars to parking spots, cashiering, serving food, setting up and tearing down tents, handing out brochures, etc.
Please let us know before any event that you would like to help and we’ll find a place for you. See our 2020 Events page or refer to “Events” on the LHS Facebook page.
We need help in our Research Library with updating and reorganizing information in binders, as well as taking care of research requests via phone, email and in person.
Train Depot Docent
Do you love trains, history, people? We need volunteers to be in the Lenexa Train Depot during operating times. If you are not knowledgeable in transportation history, a lot can be learned while at the depot. Expectations are that a volunteer be willing to educate others, stay in or in front of the building during open hours, be friendly and approachable with visitors, keep museum artifacts safe by ensuring visitors don’t touch or enter with food or drinks, and dust / clean as needed when there are no visitors.
General Museum Assistance
Interested in being in the museum and helping with random, general tasks? We could use volunteers to dust and clean museum display areas and help with other needs that may occur.
